Frederick III of Holstein-Gottorp (22 December 1597 – 10 August 1659) was a Duke of Holstein-Gottorp. He was the elder son of Duke Johann Adolf of Holstein-Gottorp and Princess Augusta of Denmark. His mother was a daughter of King Frederick II of Denmark. He had ambitious plans concerning the development of sea trade.
The House of Holstein-Gottorp, a cadet branch of the Oldenburg dynasty, ruled Sweden between 1751 and 1818, and Norway from 1814 to 1818. In 1743, Adolf Frederick of Holstein-Gottorp was elected crown prince of Sweden as a Swedish concession to Russia , a strategy for achieving an acceptable peace after the disastrous war of the same year .
His remaining territories formed the Duchy of Holstein-Gottorp, administered from Kiel. In 1773, Charles Frederick's grandson, Emperor Paul I of Russia finally gave his Holstein lands to the Danish king, in his function as duke of Holstein, in exchange for the County of Oldenburg, and Holstein was reunited as a single state.

15 de jul. de 2020 · In 1739, Johanna’s brother Adolf Frederick became the guardian of the orphaned Charles Peter Ulrich of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp, son of Charles Frederick, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp and Anna Petrovna of Russia. He was the only living grandson of Peter the Great, Emperor of Russia and he was just one year older than Sophie.

Adolphe de Holstein-Gottorp est le fils de Frédéric Ier de Danemark et de Sophie de Poméranie. Il passa quatre années de sa vie à Cassel auprès de Philippe Ier de Hesse . En 1544, le duché de Schleswig et Holstein fut divisé entre son frère Jean de Schleswig-Holstein-Hadersleben et son demi-frère Christian III de Danemark.
