Bismarck used a combination of military and political tactics to unify the various German states. Prussia’s victory over Denmark in the First Schleswig War and over Austria in the Austro-Prussian War helped to consolidate German territory under Prussian control.

The war ended in a Prussian victory and Austria was forced to return the province of Venetia to Italy. Then, in 1870, during the Franco-Prussian War, France withdrew her troops from Rome.
