George William Curtis was born in Providence, February 24, 1824. From the age of six to eleven he was in the school of C.W. Greene at Jamaica Plain, and then, until he was fifteen, attended school in Providence.
GEORGE WILLIAM CURTIS (1824-1892), American man of letters, was born in Providence, Rhode Island, on the 24th of February 1824, of old New England stock. His mother died when he was two years old. At six he was sent with his elder brother to school in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, where he remained for five years.
George William Curtis was born into a prosperous family in Providence, Rhode Island. As a teenager, he moved to New York City when his father took a position with Continental Bank. Educated by private tutors and in a boarding school, Curtis and his older brother, Burrill, spent 18 months at the Brook Farm commune in order to take advantage of its academic opportunities.
