Gleason was best known as Ralph Kramden on the black-and-white television sitcom The Honeymooners ( 1955 - 56 ), and later as Sheriff Buford T. Justice in the Smokey and the Bandit series. His last movie role before his death on June 24, 1987 at seventy-one was as Max Basner in the comedy-drama Nothing in Common ( 1986 ), starring Tom Hanks.
