Quest for Fire. The Quest for Fire ( French: La Guerre du feu, literally The War of Fire) is a 1911 Belgian fantasy novel by J.-H. Rosny, the pseudonym of two brothers; the author was actually the elder of the two, Joseph Henri Honoré Boex (1856–1940). [1] It was first published in English in an abridged edition in 1967.
I wasn't sure how interested I would be in a movie with no dialogue or at least none that's not primitive sounds. It's pretty easy to follow. A tribe of prehistoric people have their source of fire extinguished, and several tribesman, including Ron Perlman, set out to find a new one. It won an Oscar for best makeup, and it shows.
Ron Perlman is one of the three male leads/would be prometheuses. Watch the body language! Someone did research! A difficult and impressive (first movie) performance. Definitely worth a buy (the DVD has two commentaries, one with the director Jean-Jacques Annaud, one with producer Michael Gruskoff, Rae Dawn Chong and Ron Perlman).
Meanwhile, Quest for Fire stands up so well to the test of time. Probably, nobody would have the balls to make such an accurate movie today, despite the knowledge acquired since 1980. So there isn't the unpleasant tension, and desperate need for parody as a release.
