Lewis Wickes Hine wuchs in einem einfachen Restaurantbetrieb in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, im Nordosten der USA auf. 1892 starb sein Vater durch einen Unfall oder durch Selbstmord. Schon 1890, nach Beendigung der Grammar School und der Geschäftsaufgabe seines Vaters, begann Hine zu arbeiten.
