Schloss Laxenburg mainly refers to the “Franzensburg”, the main building in the park that is open to the public. It was built by the Habsburger emperor of Austria Franz II and his grandmother Maria Theresia and was completed in 1835. The replica of a medieval knights castle was never meant to be inhibited.
The Franzensburg castle is the best-known building in the Laxenburg Castles Park. The castle is named after Emperor Francis II, who erected this in 1798-1801. Francis II was responsible for the construction of this reproduction of a medieval knights castle on an artificial island in the middle of the castles pond. Laxenburg. 1740–1916. For generations of Habsburgs, Laxenburg with its palace and park, lying to the south of Vienna, was their favourite summer seat and hunting lodge among those that they had at their disposal in the environs of the city. The Alte Schloss (‘Old Castle’), a medieval moated castle, had been in Habsburg ownership since 1333.
