John Monash was born in West Melbourne in 1865 to immigrant Prussian parents, when the Victorian Colony was barely 30 years old and the population was just 40,000. The Monash family was one of the first Jewish families to arrive in Australia seeking refuge from terror, discrimination and poverty in Europe.
