My wording to him at the time was, "I think the producers of Voyager did not take the risks to make the show as good as it could be."
Rick Berman wasn't a homophobe, he was a play-it-safe coward who wanted to avoid any potential controversy to the greatest degree possible. His whole strategy was maximum risk-averse, content to produce bland and formulaic pablum guaranteed to get decent ratings by being middle-of-the-road mainstream.

He should have been kept away from the feature films all together and he should have been removed from the franchise TV side at the end of DS9's third season (1996-ish). Rick Berman was the cause of Star Trek stagnating.
I came to the Rick Berman MA article looking for a diplomatic view of the controversy surrounding Berman & Braga's involvement with Trek. In the interest of editorial fairness, I should state that I am primarily a TNG fan; I've seen only a few episodes of DS9 and Voyager, and I only just watched the Enterprise pilot.
