He married Lady Margaret Campbell, daughter of Archibald Campbell, 4th Earl of Argyll and Lady Margaret Graham, on 11 January 1563/64. He died on 20 July 1590. James Stewart, 1st Lord Doune gained the title of 1st Lord Doune.
