20 de ene. de 2020 · Sir William married, by an arrangement set up by Henry II, the 17-year old Isabel de Clare, daughter of the immensely rich 2nd Earl of Pembroke, and as she was the heiress, it gave William prestige, wealth and, of course, castles. Amongst these were Pembroke Castle and Chepstow Castle in Wales. Sir William improved both of these mighty fortresses.

Isabel de Clare was born in Leinster in 1172 to Aoife Mac Murrough and Richard de Clare (‘Strongbow’), Earl of Pembroke and Striguil. Following her brother Gilbert’s death in 1184, Isabel became sole heir and one of the wealthiest heiresses in the kingdom.

She was the wife of William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke, who served four successive kings as Lord Marshal of England.
W illiam Marshal and Isabel de Clare were married in August 1189. He was about forty-three and she was seventeen years old. They had ten children; five sons and five daughters, and all of the children lived. The birth dates of these children are not known, but it is known that William and Richard were the first two born.
