The Oxford Companion to British History. Isabella of Gloucester (d. 1217), queen of King John. Isabella, also known as Avice or Hawisa, was the youngest daughter and co-heiress of William, 2nd earl of Gloucester. She was betrothed to John, son of Henry II, in 1176 when he was only 9, presumably to provide him with estates.

When Isabella FitzWilliam Countess of Gloucester was born about 1173, in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England, her father, William FitzRobert 2nd Earl of Gloucester, was 58 and her mother, Hawise de Beaumont, was 60. She married John King of England on 24 August 1188.

On January 20, 1214, she married Geoffrey FitzGeoffrey de Mandeville, 2nd Earl of Essex.King John charged Geoffrey 20,000 marks to buy her in marriage and to obtain her title, jure uxoris, a Latin term that means “by right of his wife” and so Geoffrey was the 4th Earl of Gloucester.
Isabel de Clare was born on November 8, 1226 in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England, daughter of Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Hertford and 5th Earl of Gloucester, Surety of the Magna Carta and Isabel Marshal.
