Vincenzo Bellini. opera. Tragedia lirica in due Atti di Felice Romani, dalla tragedia istorica Beatrice Tenda di Carlo Tedaldi-Fores, scritta nel 1825 e dal ballo Beatrice di Tenda di Antonio Montincini rappresentato al Teatro alla Scala di Milano il 15 settembre 1832, cui assistette Bellini e Giuditta Pasta, che interpreterà la prima Beatrice.
Quand Beatrice di Tenda fut créé en mars 1833 à Venise la critique encensa la cantatrice mais l’insuccès fut patent. Il s’en suivit une guerre de communiqués entre le compositeur et Felice Romani, le librettiste, qui se renvoyaient mutuellement la responsabilité du fiasco.

Beatrice di Tenda connut des débuts laborieux. En 1831, Vincenzo Bellini compose sa Norma qui rencontre un imposant succès critique et populaire et à l’automne 1832, La Fenice de Venise lui commande une nouvelle œuvre devant mettre en vedette Giuditta Pasta (la créatrice de Norma).
