The bearded old satyr, half kneeling, is cautiously observing the ravishingly beautiful, recumbent nude sleeping Venus, while plump little Cupid, hardly taller than his bow and quiver, is slumbering beside his mother, with his feet tucked under him. The senuous, indeed voluptous posture of Venus is further enhanced by Ricci's resonant palette.

Sebastiano Ricci, considerato il rinnovatore della pittura rococò italiana, fu un pittore che viaggiò molto: lavorò a Firenze e a Milano, ma anche in Inghilterra dal 1712 al 1716, e per i Savoia (per i quali realizzò le pale presenti nella Galleria Sabauda e nella Basilica di Superga, a Torino).

Hace 3 días · Ricci probably produced this painting during the first decade of the eighteenth century, when he was working in Venice and receiving commissions in Vienna and Bergamo. It was most likely done before 1712, by which time he had gone to England; he returned to Italy in 1716.
