Although it has been asserted that St John was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford , his name does not appear on registers for either institution and there is no evidence to support either claim.

  3. Henry St. John, First Viscount Bolingbroke (1678-1751), was a prominent member of the Tory party in the British Parliament from 1701 until the 1714 shift of power to the Whigs. After joining the failed 1715 Jacobite Rebellion as secretary of state to James Stuart, he was exiled to France until his pardon in 1723. [2]

After entering Parliament in 1701, he became a prominent Tory in the reign of Queen Anne , serving as secretary of war (1704–08) and of state (1710–15).
