William Thomson (1824-1907) foi um físico e matemático britânico nascido em Belfast (Irlanda). Também conhecido como Lord Kelvin pelo título de nobreza concedido por suas contribuições à ciência, ele é considerado um dos estudiosos britânicos que mais contribuíram para o desenvolvimento da física.
William Thomson, also known as Lord Kelvin was an eminent physicist, mathematician, engineer and inventor. He is best known for his contributions to physics in the development of the second law of thermodynamics, the electromagnetic theory of light and the absolute temperature scale, which is measured in kelvins in his honor.

The elder Thomson had studied hard and advanced far, becoming professor of mathematics at the Belfast Academical Institution.
