He was the son of James Erskine Wemyss by his wife Emma, daughter of William Hay, 17th Earl of Erroll. On 17 April 1855, at All Saints' Church, Knightsbridge, he married Millicent Anne Mary, daughter of the Hon. John Kennedy-Erskine and his wife Lady Augusta FitzClarence .
James Wemyss's great-grandson married Millicent, daughter of Lady Augusta Gordon, and illegitimate granddaughter of William IV of the United Kingdom. Their grandson, Michael Wemyss, married Lady Victoria Cavendish-Bentinck, last surviving god-daughter of Queen Victoria .

Randolph Gordon Erskine Wemyss, or the Laird as he was most usually known, was born in Wemyss Castle on the 11 th July 1858, the eldest son on James Hay Erskine Wemyss and Augusta Millicent Anne Mary Kennedy Erskine, youngest daughter of the Honourable John Kennedy Erskine of Dun in the County of Forfar.
