Robert the father is believed to have died in 1141 and was succeeded by Adam; he is said to have died in 1167 and left a son Adam. Henry II in or before 1180 seized the lands of Adam de Brus, including Danby and its forest, which had been held by the Earl of Albemarle.

29 de may. de 2024 · An agreement between Whitby Abbey and Guisborough Priory, not later in date than 1138, mentions 4 carucates in Acklam held of Robert de Brus, and in 1279 it was found that one knight's fee and half a carucate of land here were held of the heirs of the last Peter de Brus, as were three parts of a knight's fee in 1284–5.

Bruce’s grandfather (also Robert) had been the principal challenger to John Balliol in the dispute over the Scottish succession that ended in 1292 with a resolution in Balliol’s favour.
