Nicolas Jean de Dieu Soult byl synem notáře Jeana Soulta ( 1726 – 1779 ), jenž pocházel ze starousedlické rodiny sklářů. Matkou byla Brigitte de Grenierová. Nicolas Jean měl šest dalších sourozenců. Roku 1785 vstoupil do královské armády a sloužil v pluku Royal Infanterie. Roku 1787 opustil nakrátko službu v armádě.

ニコラ＝ジャン・ド・デュ・スールト（Nicolas-Jean de Dieu Soult, 1769年 3月29日 - 1851年 11月26日）は、ナポレオン戦争期に活躍したフランスの軍人、元帥。史上6人しかいないフランス大元帥の1人。後には政治家となった。姓はスルトとも表記される。
Nicolas Jean de Dieu Soult (nēkôlä´ zhäN də dyö sōōlt), 1769–1851, marshal of France. Having won distinction in the Napoleonic Wars, especially at the battle of Austerlitz, he was created (1808) duke of Dalmatia and was given command in the Peninsular War.
