There is a plaque on a house at 426 Henry Street, Brooklyn, that says Jennie Jerome, the mother of Sir Winston Churchill, was born there. The year was 1850.
A strong personality, Jennie was well-respected and influential in the highest British social and political circles. She was said to be intelligent, witty, and quick to laughter. It was said that Queen Alexandra especially enjoyed her company, despite the fact that Jennie had been involved in an affair with her husband, Edward VII, a fact that was well-known by Alexandra.

Jennie Jerome träffade Lord Randolph Churchill sommaren 1873 vid en bal ombord på kryssaren "Ariadne", som låg för ankar utanför Cowes på Isle of Wight. Han var då 24 år gammal och Jennie endast 19. Tre dagar senare förlovade de sig i hemlighet och 1874 ingick de äktenskap på Storbritanniens ambassad i Paris.
