The unit left the airfield in June 1943. The airfield was also used for testing new types of aircraft. This included a short flight of a jet-powered Gloster aircraft by test pilot Lieutenant Gerry Sayer in 1941. Today, the airfield is still used by the RAF and is home to the officers’ training college.
The north airfield situated behind the impressive RAF College Hall is grass-surfaced and used for gliding and can best be seen from the ‘Lighter-Than-Air Road’ which leads north from the B1429. The road name commemorates the early use of the site as a RNAS airship training station, selected in 1914 because of its flatness, lack of dykes and proximity to coastal bombing and gunnery ranges.

Just over one mile to the west of the village, within the Parish of Cranwell, Brauncewell & Byards Leap, is R.A.F. College Cranwell, and R.A.F. Cranwell with its two associated airfields. The northern airfield is the older, being used for light aircraft and airships from 1916 and remains as a grassed field used regularly by gliders and light aircraft.

RAF Cranwell is part of the North Kesteven Airfield Trail. Entry to Cranwell Aviation Heritage Centre is free. Events at the Centre are free to attend also. Opening Times: 1 April to 31 October: 7 days per week 10am to 4.30pm, 1 November to 31 March: Saturdays and Sundays, 10am to 4pm. Car Parking: There is free parking at the Aviation Centre.
