Dom Pedro II, nicknamed "the Magnanimous", was the second and last monarch of the Empire of Brazil, reigning for over 58 years.
So I've been reading about Pedro II since I heard about how he reformed Brazil massively by building up its navy, constructing roads and railways, and being a great patron of the arts. I also read that he was an opponent of slavery, he never owned any and remained steadfast even while affluent slave owners began to lose respect for him.
