In return for providing France with a large auxiliary force to be used in the ensuing struggle in the winter of 1805, Napoleon was to recognize the Elector as King of Württemberg on 26 December 1805. Elector Frederick became King when he formally ascended the throne on 1 January and was crowned as such on the same day at Stuttgart, Germany.
Though his claim appeared contrary to Salic law, as his mother Princess Catherine was the daughter of William I, on his father's side he was also the senior male-line descendant of Frederick I of Württemberg through his younger son Prince Paul. In 1870 Württemberg took the side of Prussia in the Franco-German War.

Charles ( German: Karl Friedrich Alexander; 6 March 1823 – 6 October 1891) was King of Württemberg from 25 June 1864 until his death in 1891. [1] Charles I married Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna of Russia in 1846 and ascended to the throne in 1864. Despite their marriage, the couple had no children, likely due to Charles' homosexuality.

During the visit of the Allied sovereigns to London in 1814, Paul, along with many other princes, was taken to visit the Ascot races by the Prince Regent.
