It was captured several times including in 1631 when the Catholic Johann Tserclaes, Count of Tilly quickly defeated Rothenburg. After they left, the town was poor and practically empty. Add in the bubonic plague outbreak in 1634 and Rothenburg has lost its power, money and much of its people.
