As a result of the Dresden Coinage Convention, the exchange rate of these coins was pegged to the North German thaler. The grand duchy of Hesse also minted double thaler coins from 1839 and Vereinsthaler from 1857.

With these it would be able to use gunboat diplomacy to protect the global trade interests of the Confederation through a kind of informal imperialism. By this act, the Kingdom of Hungary and the Empire of Austria as two separate entities joined on an equal basis to form the Dual Monarchy of Austria-Hungary.
