Berlin won the bid to host the Games over Barcelona, Spain, on 26 April 1931, at the 29th IOC Session in Barcelona (two years before the Nazis came to power).

The original marathon route for the 1908 Marathon was set at 26 miles exactly, but extended by 385 yards to enable the start to be viewed from the nursery window of Windsor Castle!
