25 de may. de 2024 · The Brontë’s juvenilia began as a childhood game in 1826 when the Reverend Brontë brought home from Leeds twelve wooden toy soldiers as a present for Branwell. Footnote 8 Referred to as ‘the twelves’ or ‘the young men’, their initial characters were physical toy soldiers, adventurers in distant lands, who were named and modelled upon their reading, particularly of Napoleonic wars.

Consider the striking similarities, thematically, structurally and linguistically between Branwell’s Politics of Verdopolis (October-November, 1833) and the following extract from Volume I of The Last Man:
