He made a settlement of the castle and manor in 1677 (fn. 99) and died in 1684–5. (fn. 100) His son and heir Edward married Elizabeth Berkeley, on whom a settlement was made in 1688, (fn. 101) and on his death in 1692 (fn. 102) was succeeded by his son Charles.

The first proprietor of the manor upon record is Henry Fitz-Swein; in the reign of Henry III. it belonged to Robert Turp; a co-heiress of that family, after three descents, brought it to the Stapletons, in whom it continued five descents, and then passed with a co-heiress to the Musgraves in the reign of Henry VI.

This was agreed to, and a new reversionary lease granted for 21½ years.
