He was created Earl of Northampton in 1618 and died in 1630, having greatly increased his fortunes by marriage with Elizabeth daughter of Sir John Spencer, Lord Mayor of London.

The successor to his title and property three years later was his son William by his first wife Frances daughter of Francis Hastings, Earl of Huntingdon; he was created Earl of Northampton in 1618.

He married Catherine Stafford, daughter of Humphrey Stafford, 1st Duke of Buckingham and Lady Anne Neville, circa 1467. He died on 28 June 1473 at age 24.
