Lucy Page Mercer Rutherfurd was born April 26, 1891, in Washington, D.C. to a prominent Maryland Catholic family. She was educated in private schools, but because her family had very little money she had to go to work. In 1914, she became social secretary to Eleanor Roosevelt.
