In The Public and Its Problems, John Dewey offers an explanatory account of what he terms the “public,” or political community, and the state, a critical account of how the public has been “eclipsed,” or disappeared, in complex industrial nations, and a constructive account of what conditions must obtain for the public to be able to identify itself once more in democratic societies.
The instrumentalist principles are applied to fundamental social theory.
