Biography. António Portugal Duarte: Associate Professor and researcher in economics at the Faculty of Economics, University of Coimbra. He was an Honorary Visiting Research Fellow at the Birkbeck College, University of London, and a Visiting Professor at the University of Economics in Bratislava, and at the Belgrade Banking Academy.
While António was a prisoner in Morocco, his uncle Henry, the cardinal archbishop of Évora and only surviving brother of King John III of Portugal (1521–1557), was proclaimed the new monarch. The cardinal was the last legitimate Portuguese male representative of the royal line, [10] he was old and, as a Cardinal and Bishop of the Roman Catholic Church, unable to have legitimate children.
