The son of Patrick Hepburn, 3rd earl of Bothwell, Hepburn succeeded to his father’s title in 1556. Although a Protestant, he supported the Roman Catholic Mary of Lorraine, who was regent for the young queen Mary Stuart, in her struggle against the Protestant Scottish nobles.
When Sir Patrick "The Fair" Hepburn was born in January 1512, in Lanarkshire, Scotland, his father, Lord Adam Hepburn 2nd Earl of Bothwell, was 29 and his mother, Agnes Stewart Countess Of Bothwell, was 32. He married Agnes Sinclair in 1533. They were the parents of at least 1 son and 1 daughter. He registered for military service in 1531.
