Jolson has become the defacto poster boy for blackface, and implicit with that, racism. To many, it seems inconceivable that the make-up that Jolson wore was not racist; now and for all time.
Three years after Al Jolson passed away, his older brother, Harry, left us, as well. In contrast to the elaborate Jolson gravesite, Harry's grave has but a simple marker. But at the start of his career, Frank Sinatra paid homage to Al Jolson, the World's Greatest Entertainer, by singing one of his songs. Sinatra reportedly left a party where Jolson was singing, stating that he could not follow Jolie; but in 1946 he joined a radio tribute to Jolson, broadcast to promote the opening of The Jolson Story .
