While in Florida, he became principal chief of the Apalachee or Apalachicola Indians. During the First Seminole War (1814-1815), he achieved a certain level of distinction by serving as a guide to General Andrew Jackson.

His eldest son and heir, William Blount, had died of wounds received at the Battle of Barnet on 14 April 1471, and William's underage son, Edward, succeeded as 2nd Baron Mountjoy.
