History Lincoln University was founded in 1854 as the nation's first degree-granting Historically Black College and University, or HBCU. Originally chartered as Ashmun Institute, it was re-named Lincoln University in 1866 in honor of President Abraham Lincoln.
Lincoln University had its origins in Lincoln Institute, conceived by Missouri soldiers of the 62nd U.S. Colored Infantry who were stationed near Galveston, Texas, during the American Civil War. The 65th Colored Infantry also contributed to the school’s founding. Classes for free black students were inaugurated in 1866.

Under the second Morrill Act of 1890, Missouri designated Lincoln a land-grant university, emphasizing studies in agriculture, mechanics and teaching. In 1921, the Missouri Legislature passed a bill to expand the school to a four-year college and change the name from Lincoln Institute to Lincoln University, governed by a Board of Curators.
