Even before the Night of Terror, Alice Paul and Lucy Burns, chief organizers for the National Woman’s Party (NWP)—along with other Silent Sentinels—had been sentenced to Occoquan. Despite marching two by two or standing on the sidewalk against the gates of the White House, they were arrested for “obstructing traffic.”
