Himiltrude (fl. 700s) Queen of the Franks and wife of Charlemagne. Name variations: Hamiltrude; Himiltude. Flourished in the 700s; became first wife of Charles I also known as Charlemagne, emperor of the West, king of the Franks (r. 768–814), Holy Roman emperor (r. 800–814), around 768; children: several, including Pepin the Hunchback (c. 769–810).
3 de oct. de 2023 · Himiltrude was dismissed at that time and disappears from historical records. A grave excavated in the monastery of Nivelles was found to contain the corpse of a forty-year old woman, possibly identifiable with Himiltrude; if so, Himiltrude would appear to have died long after 770, although if and when she retired to Nivelles cannot be deduced.
Charlemagne's relationship with Himiltrude was by this point apparently seen as definitively illegitimate at Charlemagne's court, and Pepin was as a result being sidelined in the succession. In 792, as his father and brothers were all gathered at Regensburg, Pepin conspired with Bavarian nobles to assassinate them and install himself as king.
