The point of the film is not to create suspense, but to capture the relentlessness of human greed, the feeling that the land is so important the human spirit can be sacrificed to it. To create this feeling, Berri stands well back with his camera. There are not a lot of highly charged closeups, to turn the story into a series of phony high points.

Jean de Florette, premier volume d'une histoire qui s'achèvera le second tome Manon des Sources, est un roman terrible que ne renierait pas un Giono pour la peinture cruelle de la paysannerie... Lire la critique.
25 de ago. de 2004 · 10 septembre 2019. Jean de Florette constitue le premier tome de l'eau des collines dont l'adaptation cinématographique a contribué à sa grande notoriété aujourd'hui encore. Par rapport "Aux Souvenirs d'Enfance" on reste dans cette Provence si chère à Marcel Pagnol mais on bascule dans le roman et non plus la biographie.
