Backstage had originally been meant to be directed in 1982 by John Lamond starring Max Phipps, Jill Perryman and Steve Tandy but the film did not eventuate. [4] Howson and Hardy decided to work on Backstage together, with the story being relocated to the music world. Howson got Laura Branigan interested in the lead.
As well as being an aesthetic disaster, the film was also notorious within the industry, as noted by David Stratton: " Backstage was a ludicrously costly film, which, with other Burrowes Group productions, was the focus of an inconclusive investigation into alleged financial shenanigans by the ABC programme Four Corners.” (The program presented by Tony Jones aired on 11th April 1988).
