John Bourchier, Lord Berners, translator of the Valenciennes chronicler, Froissart, was born in Hertfordshire about 1467, and belonged to a courtly Tudor group who were little affected by the revival of classicism. Berners left Balliol College, probably without taking a degree, to seek a military career.
