RALPH NEVILLE, 1ST EARL OF WESTMORLAND, 4th Baron Neville of Raby, eldest son of John, 3rd Baron Neville, and his wife Maud Percy, was knighted by Thomas of Woodstock, afterwards Duke of Gloucester, during the French expedition of 1380, and succeeded to his father's barony in 1388.
The 3rd Earl, Ralph Neville (1456–1499), was his nephew, and the son of John Neville, Lord Neville, who was slain at the Battle of Towton. His grandson Ralph Neville, 4th Earl of Westmorland (1499–1550), was an energetic border warrior, who remained faithful to the royal cause when the other great northern lords joined the Pilgrimage of Grace.

Ralph Neville, 4th Earl of Westmorland, was born 21 February 1497 in Raby Castle, County Durham, England, United Kingdom to Ralph Neville (c1470-1498) and Edith Sandys (c1471-1529) and died 24 April 1549 of unspecified causes. He married Catherine Stafford (c1499-1555) June 1520 JL in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, Wales, United Kingdom.

Westmorland died on 3 November 1484, and was buried at St. Brandon's church, Brancepeth, Durham. He was predeceased by his second wife, Margaret, who died between 20 November 1466 and 26 April 1471, and was buried in the church of the Greyfriars, Doncaster. Westmorland was succeeded in the earldom by his nephew, Ralph Neville.
