14 de may. de 2015 · Aaron Douglas was born in Topeka, Kansas. After receiving a B.A. from the University of Nebraska (1922) and teaching art at an elite public high school for black students in Kansas City, Missouri, Douglas moved to the Harlem neighborhood of New York City, the cultural capital of black America throughout the early 20th century.
Johnson’s secretary, wrote to Douglas encouraging him to come east. Initially Douglas declined, but the following spring, at the conclusion of the school year, he resigned his teaching position and traveled to New York. Aaron Douglas was an American painter, illustrator and visual arts educator. He was a major figure in the Harlem Renaissance. He developed his art career painting murals and creating illustrations that addressed social issues around race and segregation in the United States by utilizing African-centric imagery.

Aaron Douglas’ paintings combined elements of traditional African culture and modern art.
