Barry Fitzgerald was a man with a talent for creating conundrums for the good people at the Academy. Not only did he cause an upset by being nominated in both the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor categories for the role of Fr Fitzgibbon in Going My Way (1944) – winning in the latter category, he also managed to decapitate his Oscar statuette with a golf club not long afterwards.
