Joseph Schlitz (May 15, 1831 – May 7, 1875) was a German-American entrepreneur who made his fortune in the brewing industry. Biography. Joseph Schlitz was born on May 15, 1831, in Mainz, Hesse-Darmstadt. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1850. In 1856, he assumed management of the Krug Brewery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

During the fabled Gilded Age, the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company built an amusement park, hotel, palm garden and an opera house, with all of them serving “The Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous.”
Krug steadily expanded and industrialized his brewing operations and hired Joseph Schlitz, newly arrived from Mainz, Germany, as his bookkeeper in 1850. Schlitz bought the brewery after Krug died unexpectedly in 1856, and married his widow in 1858.

Schlitz was born in Mainz, Germany where he received his education and also a four year program in bookkeeping. He arrived in Milwaukee in 1850 and shortly thereafter was hired by August Krug to be the bookkeeper for his growing brewery.
