1 de abr. de 2024 · Johann Pachelbel (baptized September 1, 1653, Nürnberg [Germany]—died March 3, 1706, Nürnberg) was a German composer known for his works for organ and one of the great organ masters of the generation before Johann Sebastian Bach. Pachelbel studied music at Altdorf and Regensburg and held posts as organist in Vienna, Stuttgart, and other cities.

Johann Ambrosius Bach, the father of Johann Sebastian Bach, became a close friend of Pachelbel. In 1678, Pachelbel was appointed as the organist of the Predigerkirche in Erfurt. This 12-year tenure in Erfurt marked an important period in his career. He established his reputation as one of the leading German organ composers of the time.

The canon was originally scored for three violins and basso continuo and paired with a gigue, known as Canon and Gigue for 3 violins and basso continuo. Both movements are in the key of D major.
