The monument was erected in 1733 and is by William Kent and J.M. Rysbrack. It was designed to match that of Sir Isaac Newton, which is on the north side of the choir screen gates.

As early as April 1713 Stanhope had begun to prepare for the forthcoming general election. Not surprisingly, he went first to his family’s traditional area of influence, the borough of Derby. However, after securing support from Lord Stanhope, he was advised that his chances of success would be slight.
