BENNETT, RICHARD BEDFORD, 1st Viscount BENNETT, lawyer, businessman, and politician; b. 3 July 1870 in Hopewell Hill, N.B., eldest of the six children of Henry John Bennett and Henrietta Stiles; d. unmarried during the night of 26–27 June 1947 near Mickleham, England. The Bennett family came from England to Connecticut in the early 17th century.
Richard Bedford Bennett was born on July 3, 1870, in Hopewell Hill, New Brunswick. His early training was as a teacher. He taught at a school for two years and then served as a principal for another two years. But by then he had become interested in the law. He graduated from Dalhousie University in 1893 and became a lawyer that year.
