Initially, the home was used as a summer residence, but it appears to have been used more regularly by the family following a 1915-1919 expansion by Fred Wentworth and Frederick Vreeland.
Esther Jane "Jennie" Tuttle Hobart was the wife of Vice President Garret Hobart who served in the administration of President William McKinley as well as a philanthropist and community activist in New Jersey.
Born and raised in Paterson, New Jersey, she was the daughter of a prominent attorney, Socrates Tuttle and his wife Jane Winters. She married her husband, Garret Hobart, in Paterson on July 21, 1869, at the start of his career as a lawyer and politician. They had two children, Garret Jr, and Fannie, who died in 1895. Esther Jane « Jennie » Tuttle Hobart (née le 30 avril 1849 à Paterson (New Jersey), morte le 8 janvier 1941) était la femme du vice-président des États-Unis américain Garret Hobart qui servit dans l'administration du président William McKinley . During the course of his education, Hobart fell in love with Jennie Tuttle, the daughter of his teacher, and they were married in 1869. Socrates Tuttle was elected mayor of Paterson in 1871, and he appointed Hobart to the position of city attorney. In 1872, Hobart took a seat in the New Jersey legislature, becoming Speaker of the House in 1874.
