During the reign of the child-king Edward VI (r.1547–53), a vicious battle for power was fought not only among the men of Edward’s council but among two of the most important women at court, Edward’s stepmother, the queen-dowager Kateryn Parr, and her once ally but now bitter enemy Anne Stanhope, Duchess of Somerset, and wife of England’s Lord Protector.

This is mainly of alabaster with an effigy of the Duchess in a red ermine-lined robe wearing a coronet. At her feet is the crest of a blue triple-towered castle, from the Stanhope coat of arms.
